Jerome was a special gift from God to me, the people of Oxford, and anyone in need or suffering from a broken heart. He was the kindest and wisest shepherd who taught me how to be a better deacon since I knew him as a Deacon with a capital "D" in the greater church. He taught me how to give and share MORE WISELY, cutting out the middle man, meeting and holding the recipients of my "charity". I'll never take clothes or shoes to a thrift shop or Goodwill because Jerome taught me that I see folks everyday who could use them right now. He taught me to shun no one and invite them to tell me their troubles so I might try to heal or support them. He taught me to lead by example and take joy from infecting others with the true spirit of Jesus Christ and the kindnesses outlined in Matthew 25:34-40. He taught me life doesn't have to be as complicated as we often make it out to be. He taught me that there is no such thing as too many friends. He taught me that service and sharing love is a blessing and a joy and never a task. Last week I was to see him about hosting a free Community Meal at the Oxford Presbyterian Church where I serve as a deacon. And through the tears and in my grief on the day of his passing I realized that he would not be able to share that joy he truly loved...serving the hungry. So, I pulled myself together, sped over to church, and signed up August 21 as the OPC Community Meal provided by Jerome Rodio. I've promised him we will serve a menu of his choosing (his son Patrick will advise us, of course). We will celebrate his life. We will honor his legacy. And I pledge to enlist others in his many causes and kindnesses. It will be a glorious day, Jerome, and only the first day of so many new commitments to carry on your work in our community and Cecil County as well. I held your dance partner Vivian Brown at church today as she cried and shared her hurt with us. I promised to help find Vivian a new partner, but she knows there will never be anyone to replace you, dear friend, and I'm not just talking about the jitterbug. You will always be with me and I'll hear your voice often telling me to be brave and just go on and do it...whatever that good thing might be. Jerome, you might remember our men's group The Men In Service Team (or the Misters). Yesterday as we worked to ready the Oaks Ministry House #2 at OPC, I felt you with me and all the other volunteers; and you know me, I had to tell them of how pleased you are with us. Relax now and rest, knowing we have our work cut out for us down here; and smile upon all those who love you and who will continue to do your work. We'll see you in Heaven one day, Mr. Mayor.
