Obituary for Donato Colavita

Donato "Donatuccio" Colavita, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished Nonno, and beloved brother, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2023. Donatuccio was a pillar of strength and love in his family, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and willpower that will forever be cherished.

One special day in 1959, Donatuccio met his future wife, Vittoria (nee Insogna) Colavita, while riding his brother’s motorcycle from Sant’Elia a Pianisi to her neighboring town of Macchia Valfortore. He was captivated “per un filo di capelli” (he was struck by a strand of her hair), and since that day, they shared a journey of laughter and companionship together for 54 remarkable years.

Donatuccio was a devoted father to Annamaria (Michael) Jacyszyn and Salvatore (Carolyn) Colavita, and his greatest joy in life was watching his family grow. He was the adoring Nonno to Maya, Milena, Ian, and Adam. He was and always will be the hardest worker in the room, having worked days, nights, and weekends as a master carpenter to provide for his family. Even on the busiest of days, he always returned to them for “pranzo” (lunch), with a navy Igloo cooler in hand and a long, rattling chain of keys on his belt loop.

He was a caring brother to Giambattista (Teresa) Colavita and Maria (the late Nicola) Colavita. Donatuccio shared a special bond with his family, and his presence brought belly laughs and joy to their lives. He was also preceded in death by his beloved sister, Suor Maria Luigia. Being a determined immigrant, he was proud of the small mountainous town he came from and shared his love and traditions with all he held dear. The most famous of them being his avid passion for winemaking, which is lovingly carried on by his son-in-law, Michael. Donatuccio always said, “Non è un pranzo se non c’è la bottiglia di vino a tavola” (It’s not a lunch without a bottle of wine at the table).

Donatuccio was a loving uncle to Anna Colavita and played an important role in her life, offering guidance and support throughout the years.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at his VIEWING on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at The Monti-Rago Funeral Home, located at 2531-35 S. Broad Street, from 8:30 AM until 10:00 AM. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 AM at the Epiphany of Our Lord Church, situated at 11th and Jackson Street. Interment will take place at S.S. Peter and Paul Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Epiphany of Our Lord Church in Donatuccio's memory. Your generosity will help carry on his devotion and love.

Donatuccio will be remembered for his unwavering love, his strong sense of family, and his deep commitment to hard work. He touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his memory continue to shine brightly in our hearts.
